El grupo es el primero de origen no escocés en alzarse con el primer premio del evento musical
The first feat was to get involved in an event that is usually exclusive to Scots; the second takes victory. The three members of the modern folk group “Deira” emerged victorious on Saturday in the “Battle of The Folk Bands” held in Glasgow. A milestone that they considered “impossible”, as they claim. The Asturian-Andalusian composition trio brought its three musicians together by chance, when three years ago they were hired to play under the Asturian tent at the Lorient Interceltic Festival, in French Brittany. Gonzalo Llao, de Gijón, Salvador Daza, a Sevillian living in Madrid, and Juan Almaraz, from Cádiz, understood each other perfectly and despite each having their own bands, they decided to get together sporadically to give shape to “Deira”. “The three of us studied classical at the Conservatory and we are passionate about folk, that brought us together a lot,” explains Almaraz on behalf of all the members.
The rehearsals during the pandemic were online, and when they were able to meet again, they did so rotating through the cities where each one belonged, although, as Almaraz acknowledges, their most recurring meeting point is Asturias. Now that they have become the peculiar winners of the Scottish festival, opportunities and calls are pouring in. “In just three days we have already been offered two festivals and some opportunities in Scotland,” says Llao. They joke among themselves that “they're going to have to move there.” As they claim, they seem to be living a dream, not only because of the tribute they have extracted from the United Kingdom; also because of the amount of friendships, offers and knowledge that they take away from there.
